A food chain is the sequence of who eats whom in a biological community (an ecosystem) to obtain nutrition.
In other words, they show who eats whom. The consumed energy passes into composers and detritivores which are eaten by smaller organisms like carnivores. Food chains intertwine locally into a food web because most organisms consume more than one type of animal or plant. As the energy flows from organism to organism, energy is lost at each step.
